Singing, organ and piano in the historic centre of Prague

Mezzo-soprano Yvona Škvárová, a soloist of the National Theatre, performs together with organist and pianist Jan Kalfus, a professor at the Prague Conservatory. Although only two musicians perform in the concert, they create a rich variety of sound – from the intimate combination of singing and piano to the powerful sound of singing with the pipe organ.

The programme includes Mozart’s Ave verum corpus, Vivaldi’s Gloria in D Major, Handel’s famous aria Lascia ch’io pianga, a selection from Dvořák’s Biblical Songs and well-known organ works by Bach and Mozart. Sacred music, lyrical arias and organ pieces create a calm and uplifting atmosphere in the baroque interior of Kostel sv. Mikuláše on the Old Town Square.

During the concert, the singer also welcomes the audience with a few words in English, making the performance feel more personal.

Voice and music from different parts of the church

The concert begins downstairs, directly in front of the audience, where the mezzo-soprano is
accompanied by piano. From close by, you can hear the natural colour of her voice and enjoy the gentle, intimate combination of singing and piano.

The performers then move high above the audience to the main balcony beside the large pipe organ. Part of the concert also takes place on a side balcony, so the singer’s voice reaches the audience from different directions. Together with the organ, the music rises into the dome and spreads throughout the baroque interior.

At the end, the musicians return downstairs and perform close to the audience once again. Thanks to the exceptional acoustics and unique design of Kostel sv. Mikuláše, the same voice creates a different impression in each part of the space. The contrast between the intimate piano, majestic organ and singing from above makes the concert impressive for both the ears and the eyes.
