Christmas concert by candlelight in a Prague church

The concert begins in darkness. Singing by candlelight, the choir slowly walks through the audience before taking its place at the front of the church. The silence, candlelight and first notes create a special atmosphere from the very beginning.

After the ceremonial entrance, you will hear gentle classical music including Ave Maria. The programme then gradually turns into a colourful journey through Christmas music from around the world, with Czech, European and American carols, spirituals and famous Christmas songs performed in their original languages with piano accompaniment. The programme includes favourites such as Adeste Fideles, Happy Xmas (War Is Over), Go Tell It on the Mountain and Silent Night.

Dance, music and singing

The choir performs downstairs directly in front of the audience throughout the concert. But this is not a static choir performance. The singers move during the programme, use small musical instruments and even add gentle movement to some of the songs.

The audience gradually becomes part of the concert too. Following the choirmaster, you can sing familiar melodies, clap along to the rhythm and become part of the performance for a moment. This gives the concert a much more lively and personal atmosphere than a traditional choir concert.

In December, the experience is completed by the illuminated nativity scene inside the church and the Christmas atmosphere of the Old Town Square. The concert ends with one of the world’s best-known Christmas melodies, Silent Night, bringing a calm and emotional finish to a colourful programme full of different languages, rhythms and Christmas traditions.
