Christmas music in the glow of a Baroque church

December evenings give St. Nicholas Church a special atmosphere. The Christmas tree shines on the Old Town Square, while inside the church the Baroque decorations, dome and illuminated nativity scene emerge from the soft light. In this setting, Saint Nicholas Chamber Soloists perform a Christmas programme for soprano, trumpet, organ and piano.

You will hear Bach’s Toccata in F Major, Handel’s aria Let The Bright Seraphim, the famous O Holy Night, Adeste Fideles and other Christmas carols and songs. Professional artists from the National Theatre and State Opera combine famous classical music with melodies that truly belong to Christmas.

During the concert, the music comes from different parts of the church. Organ and singing sound from the main organ balcony high above the audience, part of the programme comes from a side balcony, and other pieces are performed downstairs directly in front of the audience with piano. Light, Baroque architecture and long reverberation together create the atmosphere of a magical winter evening in the historic centre of Prague.

A play of light, space and music

In winter, the concert takes place in the illuminated Baroque interior, where frescoes, golden details, the large pipe organ and the Christmas nativity scene stand out from the soft light. Together with live music, the church has a completely different atmosphere in the evening than during the day.

The performers use different parts of the church. The sound of soprano, trumpet and organ rises into the dome, where the long reverberation reflects it back towards the audience. When the musicians move downstairs to the piano, the sound becomes more direct and intimate.

The sopranos alternate on different concert dates. Zuzana Kós Kopřivová, Marie Šimůnková and Vanda Šípová are soloists of the National Theatre. Each has a different voice colour and her own performance style, while all three bring a high professional standard.

Famous Christmas melodies such as O Holy Night and Adeste Fideles, the illuminated nativity scene and the evening atmosphere of the Old Town Square bring music, light and historic space together in one Christmas experience.
